Sort Out Heating Problems
Furnace cycles too often
The problem is likely to be with the thermostat. Your unit could be overheating because of a clogged air filter or blower that is malfunctioning.
Not enough heat
Usually a clogged air filter or a blower that has dirt built up on its blades can cause poor air flow. Another cause can be dirty gas burners. Call PDM for help.
Furnace blower runs constantly
Fan switch set On (rather than set on Auto) for continuous circulation. Another problem is you limit control is out of adjustment. The limit switch is made to shut off the furnace if the air in the plenum gets too hot. If you are handy, use your owner’s manual to reset the pointers on the fan side of the limit control. Set lower pointer to about 90 degrees F and the upper one at about 115 degrees.
Furnace makes noises; squeals, rattles
Usually the noise occurs when the belt that connects the motor to the fan slips. The belt may be improperly aligned or worn and must be replaced. If the blower is making a grinding noise, shut off the unit and call Technician. Your motor’s bearings are probably shot. Other rattling sounds can be cover panels are not secured or loose ductwork.
Is your equipment dirty?
It may the cause of heating breakdowns and wasted energy.
Air duct leak
Can you use grey duct tape to seal air duct leaks? No. Common grey duct tape dries out over time and will allow air to leak again. Use an aluminized metal duct tape. If you need help in testing your air duct system for leaks, call Technician.
