Teaching Teachers on Environment Issues
The Energy Research Institute (TERI) and ITC Foods Sunfeast recently organised a training workshop for schoolteachers in the Capital, as part of their Sunfeast Hara Banao campaign. 50 teachers attended the workshop, from 23 schools of Delhi.
The workshop began with a melodious song by tiny tots of the school who presented their views on environment, urging all to save trees for a greener earth. Shalini Punjabi, research associate at TERI, introduced the campaign and apprised the audience about the massive outreach of the programme in the field of environmental education and awareness.
The remaining presentations were followed by group activities, wherein teachers were divided into five thematic discussion groups, namely, electrical energy, transportation, waste management, bio-diversity, and communicating concerns about the environment. Representatives from each group presented the key points that emerged from their discussion, in the context of environment and climate change.
The teachers expressed their concern, for a growing need for an effective public transport system to reduce the reliance on inefficient fuel technologies and personalised transportation options. A neighbourhood-school system should be promoted so that students could walk or cycle to nearby schools. With respect to transport sector, car-pools and metro rail systems were cited as the two most effective ways to deal with energy inefficiency. The conference unanimously iterated that proper paper management should be taught and taken seriously in all schools.
